Chairman Kim Hyun-gi: "Contributing to the Improvement of Disaster Response Capabilities and Infrastructure Enhancement in Fire Services of Sister City Ulaanbaatar"
Kim Hyun-gi, Chairman of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, attended the Seoul-Ulaanbaatar fire truck handover ceremony held at Sukhbaatar Square in Mongolia on the 20th.
This visit was in response to the official invitation from the Ulaanbaatar City Council to the Seoul City Council delegation to commemorate the fire truck handover ceremony, and Chairman Kim visited Ulaanbaatar for a 2-day, 1-night trip from June 20 to 21.
The handover ceremony was attended by Kim Hyun-gi, Chairman of the Seoul Metropolitan Council; Batbayasgalan Jantsan, Chairman of the Ulaanbaatar City Council; Dashnyam Altantuya, Director of the Capital Crisis Management Bureau; and Yoon Deuk-soo, Head of the Safety Management Division of the Fire and Disaster Headquarters.
The fire trucks delivered to Mongolia this time include a total of 10 vehicles: 2 fully serviced fire pump trucks, 1 rescue work truck, 6 ambulances, and 1 ladder truck.
Chairman Kim said, “When I officially visited Mongolia last August, I was asked to donate firefighting equipment,” adding, “I am very pleased to fulfill last year’s promise and deliver fire trucks as a result of mutual exchanges between the two cities.”
He also said, “It is especially meaningful to hold the fire truck handover ceremony at Sukhbaatar Square, a symbol of Mongolia’s independence and sovereignty, where the safety of citizens will be ensured,” and added, “I hope this will contribute to improving disaster response capabilities and strengthening infrastructure in the firefighting sector of our sister city, Ulaanbaatar.”
Chairman Kim stated, “The delivery of fire trucks has the significance of spreading Seoul’s excellent firefighting equipment and technology, promoting mutual development and a culture of sharing,” and said, “I look forward to continued exchanges and development between the two cities based on trust in various fields.”
Batbayasgalan Jantsan, Chairman of the Ulaanbaatar City Council, said, “Ulaanbaatar is a region where 50% of Mongolia’s population is concentrated and is vulnerable to disasters, so the fire trucks donated by Seoul will be a great help at disaster sites,” and expressed gratitude on behalf of the citizens. He also said, “I want to further develop the friendship and cooperative relationship between Seoul and Ulaanbaatar through this opportunity.”
Prior to the handover ceremony, in May, a training session was held at the Seoul Fire Academy inviting Ulaanbaatar fire officials to share fire truck operation and maintenance methods.
The Seoul Fire and Disaster Headquarters supports developing countries by providing firefighting equipment that has passed its legal usage period but is still usable through Official Development Assistance (ODA) to strengthen disaster response capabilities and promote Seoul Fire’s excellent policies and image.
Starting with the free donation of two fire pump trucks to the Philippines in 2012, a total of 199 fire trucks have been donated free of charge to 13 countries to date. The types of fire trucks supported include eight categories such as fire pump trucks, water tank trucks, and ambulances.
