Gunsan Coast Guard Arrests 65 Individuals Violating Maritime Safety Regulations
56 Unlicensed or Unregistered Offenders Missed Safety Inspections... Total Up 86%
Gunsan Maritime Police Station (Chief Park Kyung-chae) announced on the 18th that it has arrested 65 people through a special crackdown on marine safety violations in the first half of the year.
According to Gunsan Maritime Police, from March 15 to May 31, about three months, they conducted crackdowns on crimes threatening public safety such as ▲overloading and overcapacity ▲failure to comply with cargo ship securing guidelines ▲failure to report crew changes ▲illegal modifications and expansions ▲failure to undergo safety inspections, resulting in 65 arrests in 77 cases.
The types of violations detected were 38 cases (26 people) of failure to undergo safety inspections, 30 cases (30 people) of unlicensed (unregistered) operation, and 3 cases (3 people) of overloading and overcapacity, in that order. Ship safety inspections must be conducted to ensure seaworthiness, which is the ship’s ability to withstand dangers such as waves and navigate safely. The most common case detected in this crackdown was operating without properly undergoing these inspections.
Meanwhile, Gunsan Maritime Police conducts special crackdowns on marine safety violations every year, having detected 79 cases in 2022 and 40 cases last year.
