Amicogen Completes Construction of Media and Resin Factory for Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing
From this year, it has become possible to mass-produce media and resins, essential production elements of biopharmaceuticals that were mostly dependent on overseas imports, domestically.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 18th, Amicogen held completion ceremonies for media and resin production plants in Incheon Songdo and Yeosu, respectively, on the morning of the same day. Established in 2000, Amicogen is a domestic bio materials, parts, and equipment (SoBuJang) company that developed independent media and resin technologies through a national project for the localization of biopharmaceutical SoBuJang.
Media refers to raw materials where environments such as osmotic pressure, pH, and nutrients are created for cell culture, and resin refers to materials used to purify proteins from cell lines (cell collections that can be continuously cultured outside the body). To produce media and resin, Amicogen established subsidiaries BeyondCell and PurioGen in 2021. Subsequently, they started construction of the Songdo media plant (2022) and the Yeosu resin plant (2023), and through today's completion, they have embarked on the commercialization of the country's first cell culture media and antibody purification resin.
The Songdo media plant can produce approximately 100 tons of powder (equivalent to 4 million liters of liquid annually), which accounts for one-third of the media demand of major domestic biopharmaceutical manufacturers. The Yeosu resin plant has an annual production capacity of about 10,000 liters and can produce all types of resins, including antibody purification resins and ion exchange resins.

Lee Seung-ryeol, Director of Industrial Policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, said, "Amid difficult conditions relying on a few global bio SoBuJang companies, Amicogen's bold challenge will greatly help domestic supply chain independence," adding, "We will spare no support so that domestic bio SoBuJang companies can grow into global star companies and lead the future of the bio industry."
