Former Gyeongnam Governor Kim Kyung-soo, who returned to Korea to attend the memorial service for former President Roh Moo-hyun, quietly departed on the 14th. Kim, who did not show any public activities other than the memorial service schedule, said, "I believe politics should give hope to the people and act as a mediator of conflicts," adding, "As a politician, I think there is a part that requires deep reflection on whether our politics is truly fulfilling that role."
Speaking to reporters at Incheon Airport before departing for the UK, former Governor Kim said, "I plan to visit countries that are successfully fulfilling such roles (giving hope and mediating conflicts) to deeply contemplate and study what makes them different from us."
Since returning on the 19th of last month, former Governor Kim is known to have refrained from public activities except for attending the memorial service for former President Roh, meeting with acquaintances. He introduced, "I attended the 15th anniversary memorial service for former President Roh and had some personal matters to attend to, so I briefly came to Korea. I am making efforts to find solutions to various Korean issues from a new perspective abroad." He continued, "After leaving this time, I will go to the UK, finish my life there, and then stay in Germany for about six months. I expect to return around the end of the year."
Regarding what he studied during his overseas stay, he said, "I hope to have an opportunity to share or introduce what issues I am currently focusing on through other channels," adding, "At this moment of departure, the best I can do is to briefly greet the people and say I will return safely." He also expressed his determination, saying, "During the remaining period, seeing, listening, and learning more is the most important thing for me right now, and I will do my best for that."

Regarding plans after returning at the end of the year, he said, "I think I should talk about that after I return," and concerning a political comeback, he added, "I will talk about that later when the time comes."
