The Seongbuk-gu Public Health Center (District Mayor Lee Seung-ro) in Seoul conducted a campaign on May 31 to promote the expansion of smoke-free zones in daycare centers, kindergartens, and elementary, middle, and high schools, which will take effect from August 17, in observance of the 37th World No Tobacco Day.
Currently, smoke-free zones are designated within 10 meters from the boundaries of daycare and kindergarten facilities. Starting August 17, this will be expanded to within 30 meters from the boundaries of daycare centers, kindergartens, and elementary, middle, and high school facilities.
The district is making efforts to promote and guide the expansion of smoke-free zones. Along with conducting promotional activities for the expansion of smoke-free zones on ‘Hanaro Street,’ a representative smoke-free street in Seongbuk-gu, they also carried out plogging activities by picking up cigarette butts and trash.
Additionally, the district is implementing various projects to promote residents’ health, such as raising awareness about the dangers of secondhand smoke and electronic cigarettes, supporting smokers to quit, and operating smoking cessation clinics to protect residents from secondhand smoke.
