17-Year-Old Boy Causes Death of Man and Woman in Their 20s Due to Drunk Driving
Released on Bail 15 Hours After Police Arrest
Local Court Orders 15 Days of Community Service and Submission of Reflection Letter

A court in India has sparked controversy by giving a lenient punishment of 'submission of a reflection letter' to a teenage boy who caused the deaths of two people due to drunk driving. On the 23rd (local time), foreign media including NDTV reported that in Pune city, Maharashtra state, India, a 17-year-old boy caused a drunk driving traffic accident on the morning of the 19th, resulting in the deaths of a man and a woman in their 20s.

The boy who caused the traffic accident was intoxicated at the time and was driving a Porsche at over 240 km/h when he collided with a motorcycle carrying the victims. The woman died at the scene, and the man was transported to the hospital but ultimately passed away. The boy, identified as A, was arrested by the police and handed over to the Juvenile Justice Board responsible for minors but was released on bail after 15 hours. The local court ordered 15 days of community service along with the submission of a 300-character essay on 'traffic accidents and their solutions.'

Once this fact became known, public outrage erupted in India. In particular, criticism grew over the perception of 'justice for the rich, injustice for the poor' as it was revealed that A is the son of a famous real estate tycoon. Rahul Gandhi, leader of the Indian National Congress, the main opposition party in India, expressed anger, saying, "The son of a wealthy person who drives a Porsche and commits drunk driving only receives a punishment to submit an essay. Why is this punishment not given to truck or bus drivers?"

As the controversy grew, the police belatedly arrested restaurant staff who provided alcohol to the minor and A’s father. Amitesh Kumar, Pune Police Commissioner, stated, "The boy’s father was arrested on charges of allowing his minor son to drive," and added, "We will make every effort to ensure that justice is served for the two young lives lost and that the accused receive appropriate punishment, including the three who provided alcohol to the boy." Although the Pune police requested a review of the bail order for the boy, it is reported that he is being investigated on charges of negligent homicide rather than murder.

The victims’ families claim this case is not a simple accident but 'murder.' The mother of the deceased man said in an interview with NDTV, "I will never see my son again," and added, "If that boy had not made such a huge mistake, no one would have died. This is murder." The mother of the deceased woman said, "The parents did not raise their son properly. They should not have given him a car," and added, "We want justice. The boy and his parents must be severely punished."
