Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, Urges Installation of Aboveground Pedestrian Bridge at Susaek Station
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, attended a meeting on the afternoon of the 20th at the Mapo District Office Policy Meeting Room to discuss the installation of an above-ground pedestrian walkway around Susaek Station.
The meeting was held to discuss the progress of the development project around Susaek Station and the installation of the pedestrian bridge, with about 10 participants including Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, officials from relevant departments of Seoul City, the Korea Railroad Corporation Smart Station Area Project Group, and other responsible personnel.
Currently, the pedestrian path connecting Susaek Station to Sangam-dong DMC (Digital Media City) consists only of an underground passageway completed in 1936, forcing residents who wish to travel above ground to take a long detour.
Additionally, the underground passageway is very narrow compared to the large number of people during rush hours, and despite the installation of CCTV, concerns have been continuously raised about the fear pedestrians feel due to low foot traffic at night and early morning.
Furthermore, Mapo District explained that during the summer monsoon season, there is a risk of flooding, making an above-ground pedestrian walkway essential for safety.
On this day, Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, emphasized the necessity of the above-ground pedestrian walkway, stating, “The underground passage is the shortest route connecting Susaek Station to DMC, a major business district in Korea, and although it is intended for pedestrians only, it is also used by cyclists and motorcyclists, posing a significant threat to pedestrian safety.”

He added, “Especially since the underground passage is very old, flooding and slipping accidents can occur on rainy days, to the extent that Mapo District conducts safety inspections regularly,” and expressed hope that the above-ground pedestrian walkway would be installed as soon as possible to create a pleasant walking environment and enhance safety.
