Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do, officially announced on the 20th the new designation of local cultural heritage, including the ‘Saengil Seoseong-ri Dangje and Balgwangdae Nori,’ through the deliberation of the Local Cultural Heritage Protection Committee.
According to the county on the 20th, the newly designated cultural heritages are △Saengil Seoseong-ri Dangje and Balgwangdae Nori △Gogeum Sangjeong-ri Gwolgung Nongak △Geumil Sinpyeong-ri Dangje, totaling three items.
Local cultural heritage refers to tangible and intangible heritage, monuments, and folk materials that have not been designated as national or provincial cultural heritage but hold significant historical, academic, artistic, or scenic value, designated by the county.

‘Saengil Seoseong-ri Dangje’ represents a typical form of Dangje (shrine ritual) practiced along the southwestern coast, but unlike other places, it also includes the Balgwangdae Nori performance, which has been recognized for its historical, academic, regional, cultural, and artistic value and thus designated as local cultural heritage. The custodian is Chairman Choi Yu-gyun.
‘Gogeum Sangjeong-ri Gwolgung Nongak’ is a pungmul performance played during the village communal ritual and yard stepping on the 3rd day of the lunar calendar every year.
‘Gogeum Sangjeong-ri Gwolgung Nongak’ holds historical and academic value as it preserves the nongak (farmers’ music) of the nongak troupe formed when the ‘Byeongjang Doseol’ was published after the Imjin War. The custodian is designated as Sangsoe Lee Jae-hwa.
‘Sinpyeong-ri Dangje’ is held every year on the night of the 2nd day of the lunar calendar, and the final procedure, Heonsik (offering food), involves placing 12 bowls of rice on 12 sheets of hanji paper, symbolizing a wish for the village’s peace throughout the 12 months of the year.
It is valued for its distinctive transmission compared to other regions and was designated as local cultural heritage due to the increasing need for preservation.
A county official stated, “Including the three newly designated items, we will not only preserve the precious cultural heritage located in our county but also utilize them as historical and cultural tourism resources to further enhance their value.”
