Uber Agrees to 240 Billion KRW Settlement with Australian Taxis... "Fifth Largest Amount in Australian History"
Vehicle-hailing platform Uber, upon entering the Australian market, has agreed to pay the fifth-largest class-action settlement in Australian history to local taxi and rental car company drivers involved in the dispute.
On the 18th (local time), according to major foreign media including Bloomberg, Michael Donnelly, a lawyer representing more than 8,000 Australian taxi and rental car company drivers, announced that he received a settlement of 271.8 million Australian dollars (178 million USD, 240 billion KRW) from Uber and decided to withdraw the ongoing damages lawsuit at the Victoria Supreme Court. This settlement amount is the fifth-largest in the history of class-action lawsuits in Australia.
Uber has been fiercely competing with taxi industries in various countries as it expands globally. In Australia's case, major states have legalized since 2015 that Uber drivers can operate without taxi licenses, but the taxi and rental car industries claimed that Uber had been operating while ignoring the licensing system, causing significant business losses, and filed a damages lawsuit in 2019.
