Mokpo City Launches Design Competition for New Mokpo Station... To Become a Landmark Representing the Southwest Region
Project 추진 with a 76% Significant Expansion Compared to Existing Historical Area
Mokpo City announced on the 25th that the design competition for the reconstruction project of Mokpo Station by Korail (Honam Line Mokpo Station Facility Improvement Project) has begun, aiming to rebuild the station as an elevated station for the first time in 46 years since the original ground-level station was built in 1978.
The design competition for the reconstruction of Mokpo Station, hosted by Korea Railroad Corporation, started with the announcement on the 21st and will select the winning design on May 31 after the work review on May 28.
The winning design will be individually notified, and those interested can view the winning work during the Korea Railroad Corporation’s exhibition period on June 3. After selecting the winning design, detailed design will proceed for 15 months, with construction starting in 2026 and completion targeted for 2028.
The project scale covers a site area of 100,549㎡ and a project area of approximately 4,231.8㎡, with the size of the elevated station (2 to 3 floors) to be determined during the design competition process. The total project cost is estimated at 49 billion KRW (40% from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, 60% from Korea Railroad Corporation), including an estimated construction cost of 34.505 billion KRW and an estimated design fee of 2.454 billion KRW, while other ancillary works will be commissioned separately.
The city has established the feasibility of the Mokpo Station reconstruction and railway facility relocation project and has continuously advocated for the necessity of rebuilding the station by frequently visiting government offices such as the Presidential Secretariat, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Ministry of Economy and Finance, the National Assembly, and Korea Railroad Corporation, based on cooperation with Jeollanam-do and reflecting it as a national project.
As a result, reflecting future demand including the Honam High-Speed Railway Phase 2 project and the Namhae Line railway construction project, and considering that the current facilities such as waiting rooms and restrooms per passenger are insufficient compared to other stations with an average daily usage of about 7,000 passengers and about 10,000 on weekends, the government budget included the Mokpo Station aging station improvement project at the end of last year.
The reconstruction will proceed by demolishing the existing ground-level station and building a new elevated station above the tracks. Convenience facilities such as the lobby, concourse, restrooms, passenger service spaces, and operational, transportation, and support facilities will be expanded, increasing the project area from 2,404.0㎡ to 4,231.8㎡, a significant 76% increase compared to the existing size.
The city plans to promote station area development alongside the Mokpo Station reconstruction project to strengthen commercial, transportation, and residential conditions in the original downtown area, creating a dignified complex cultural space in Mokpo.
Mayor Park Hong-ryul stated, “We expect that the newly constructed Mokpo Station will greatly help activate the local economy and tourism by increasing the number of tourists as well as train passengers,” and added, “We will strive to make Mokpo Station a distinctive design reflecting not only the future but also Mokpo’s history and symbolism, establishing it as a representative landmark of the southwestern region.”
