Woods made his comeback at this tournament after 10 months, following ankle surgery after withdrawing from the Masters major tournament in April last year. Since his 2021 car accident, Woods had been limping whenever he appeared on the course, but this time his gait was different. He climbed uphill without effort. However, he revealed that he experienced a back spasm starting from the 16th hole (par 3) of the first round. There were suspicions that another injury might have recurred. Nevertheless, Woods clearly stated, "The reason for my withdrawal is the flu."
