Yoon President's Approval Rises After Seol Holiday
Democratic Party Trails People Power Party by 6%p
76% Support Expansion of Medical School Quotas
President Yoon Suk-yeol and the People Power Party's approval ratings have risen. In contrast, the Democratic Party's approval rating showed a downward trend.
Gallup reported on the 16th that in its regular survey conducted from the 13th to the 15th (a telephone interviewer survey using a random digit dialing method targeting 1,002 men and women aged 18 and over nationwide), President Yoon's approval rating rose by 4 percentage points from two weeks ago to 33%. The disapproval rating also fell by 5 percentage points to 58%.
A Gallup official explained, "The decline in the positive job performance rating that continued throughout the first month of the new year stopped after the Lunar New Year," adding, "The negative sentiment toward the president slightly eased across most respondent characteristics, including conservatives." In particular, the expansion of medical school quotas appears to have contributed to the improvement in approval ratings. The reason for the positive evaluation of approval ratings newly included the increase in medical school quotas.
In party approval ratings, the People Power Party's support rose by 3 percentage points over two weeks to 37%. On the other hand, the Democratic Party's support fell by 4 percentage points to 31%. In the pre-Lunar New Year survey, the Democratic Party led by about 1 percentage point, which was within the margin of error (±3.1 percentage points). After the Lunar New Year, it showed a 6 percentage point deficit within the margin of error. Gallup described this as "a fluctuation within the margin of error where statistical superiority cannot be determined" regarding the gap in approval ratings.
When asked which side respondents hoped would become the majority party in the general election?the ruling party, the main opposition party, or the third zone?the ruling party received 36%, the main opposition party 31%, and the third zone 18%. Compared to the previous survey conducted in the fourth week of January (23rd?25th), the ruling party rose by 3 percentage points, while the main opposition party and the third zone fell by 2 and 6 percentage points, respectively.
Regarding the government's plan to expand medical school quotas by 2,000, 76% of respondents expressed support. Those who expressed opposition accounted for 16%.
