'Apgujeong Rolls-Royce' Man Appeals 20-Year Prison Sentence in First Trial
The so-called 'Apgujeong Rolls-Royce' driver, who caused the death of a pedestrian while driving under the influence of psychotropic drugs, has appealed after being sentenced to 20 years in prison in the first trial.
According to the legal community on the 30th, the perpetrator Shin Mo (28) submitted an appeal to the Seoul Central District Court on the same day. It has been six days since he was sentenced to 20 years in prison in the first trial on the 24th.
Earlier, the victim's family stated on the same day, "Although there are some regrets about the prosecution's sentencing request and the sentence in the first trial, we judged that there is little need to request an appeal (to the prosecution)."
This was because the prosecution had no grounds to appeal in principle as the sentence was the same as the prosecution's request in the first trial, and most of Shin's charges were proven during the trial process, resulting in a heavier sentence than other traffic accident death cases.

They also explained that they considered the fact that Shin is currently being additionally indicted on charges such as violating the Narcotics Control Act, which could increase the sentence.
However, as the perpetrator Shin has expressed dissatisfaction with the first trial, the prosecution and Shin are expected to engage in another legal battle in the appellate trial.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office announced immediately after Shin's appeal, "We will do our best to maintain the prosecution so that a heavy sentence can be imposed in the appellate trial as in the first trial," and "We are investigating the case of the suspect's use of psychotropic drugs and other narcotics that triggered the incident and will handle it promptly and strictly."
Shin, who was arrested and indicted on charges including hit-and-run causing death under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, is accused of driving a Rolls-Royce near Apgujeong Station in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, at around 8:10 p.m. on August 2 last year, crashing onto the sidewalk, injuring Mr. A (then 27 years old), and fleeing without providing aid.
