A high school student who killed a female peer he met through a chat application was sentenced to the maximum sentence under the Juvenile Act in the first trial.
On the 27th, the Criminal Division 1 of Suwon District Court Seongnam Branch (Chief Judge Kang Dong-won) sentenced A (17), who was detained and indicted on charges including murder, to the maximum sentence under the Juvenile Act: 15 years of long-term imprisonment and 7 years of short-term imprisonment. For minors under the age of 19, an indeterminate sentence divided into long-term and short-term imprisonment with upper and lower limits can be imposed.
A was indicted on charges of stabbing and killing B (then 16) at B’s home in Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi Province, at around 3:25 a.m. on October 28 last year. The two met through a chat application, and A visited B’s home where they drank alcohol alone. A quarrel broke out, and both wielded weapons against each other. At the time, B stabbed A once, but A stabbed B multiple times, resulting in B’s death. After the crime, A reportedly called 112 himself and reported, “I am currently stabbed by (B).” Police who arrived at the scene arrested A on the spot, and B was transported to the hospital but eventually died.
During the trial, A claimed there was no intent to kill, but the court judged that intent to kill the victim was recognized considering the type of weapon, the attacked areas, and the likelihood of the fatal outcome.

The court stated, “According to evidence found at the crime scene, it appears that a dispute arose due to the defendant’s unilateral demand for sexual relations or other words and actions,” and added, “The victim’s bereaved family is petitioning for severe punishment.” Regarding the sentencing, the court explained, “Even considering that the defendant is a juvenile, the wounds found on the victim’s body show that the method and content of the crime were brutal,” and “Due to the seriousness of the victim’s death, severe punishment is inevitable.”
