Shinan-gun Selected for '2024 Fisheries Village New Vitality Promotion Project' Contest... Secures 10 Billion KRW
Expansion of Infrastructure in Underdeveloped Fishing Villages... Anticipation for Safe Harbor Development
Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Park Woo-ryang) has secured a total project budget of 10 billion KRW, with 5 billion KRW each, as Jangsan Andu·Makgeum Port and Heuksan Gageo 3-gu Port were newly selected as target sites for the "2024 Fisheries Village New Vitality Promotion Project" announced by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
According to the county on the 10th, the Fisheries Village New Vitality Promotion Project is a five-year initiative starting in 2023 that invests a total of 30 trillion KRW in 300 fisheries villages to transform them into vibrant spaces. To provide systematic support according to the scale and characteristics of the fisheries villages, the project is promoted in three types: establishment of fisheries economy platforms, establishment of fisheries living platforms, and improvement of fisheries safety infrastructure.
Andu and Makgeum Port in Jangsan-myeon plan to improve fishing port facilities and expand convenience facilities at ports of call to create pleasant and safe fishing ports and ports of call. Gageo 3-gu Port, located on Gageo Island, the southwesternmost point of the country, will carry out projects to improve residents' living conditions, such as constructing breakwaters, quays, and village halls.
Following the selection of three sites last year, the county achieved the highest number of selections nationwide again this year with two sites selected. However, with 13 local fishing ports (15% of Jeollanam-do) and 198 small ports and harbors (23% of Jeollanam-do) within its jurisdiction, there are still many ports that need maintenance. Therefore, the county hopes for the continuous expansion and implementation of the Fisheries Village New Vitality Promotion Project.
Governor Park Woo-ryang said, "We expect to create tangible results that local residents can feel, such as safe maritime transportation use and increased fishing income, through the Fisheries Village New Vitality Promotion Project," and added, "We will do our best to ensure that fisheries villages not selected this time will definitely be selected next year."
