Statistics Korea will release population projections segmented by native Koreans, foreigners, and migration-background populations up to the year 2042 in April.
Statistics Korea announced on the 10th that it will publish in April the future population projections as of 2022, breaking down the total population into native Koreans, foreigners, and migration-background populations, and providing forecasts on population size, population structure, and dependency ratios.

View original imageThis statistic is characterized by segmenting the total population into native Koreans and foreigners, and further subdividing native Koreans by birth, naturalization, and second-generation immigrants based on the nationality of themselves and their parents, thereby expanding the diversity of population types in the statistics. The migration-background population is calculated as the sum of naturalized citizens, second-generation immigrants, and foreigners.
Based on this, the plan is to support timely policy-making related to welfare expenditure long-term fiscal projections targeting native Koreans, as well as policies concerning foreigners, multicultural education, and families.

Lee Hyung-il, Commissioner of Statistics Korea, stated, "In 2024, Statistics Korea will strive to support evidence-based policies such as multicultural family and foreigner policies in the paradigm shift of population policy through the production of statistics related to changes in population structure."
