All 10 Arrest Warrants for Daejinyeon Members Attempting to Enter the Presidential Office Rejected
The arrest warrants for 10 members of the University Student Progressive Alliance (Daejinyeon) who attempted to enter the Presidential Office in Yongsan, Seoul, were all dismissed on the 9th.
Song Kyungho, the chief judge in charge of warrants at the Seoul Western District Court, conducted a detention hearing (warrant review) for about an hour from 10 a.m. regarding these individuals, and then dismissed all their arrest warrants, stating that "they did not plan or carry out collective violent acts."
Judge Song explained, "The suspects have acknowledged the circumstances and details of the crime, as well as the objective facts, and have pledged to attend future investigations and trials faithfully. Considering their age, occupation, residence, and the principle of non-detention in criminal procedure law, it is difficult to recognize the necessity of detention."
Members of Daejinyeon gathered in front of the Presidential Office around 1 p.m. on the 6th, shouting slogans such as "Special investigation on Kim Geonhee," and attempted to enter the Presidential Office through checkpoints but were arrested.
The police applied for arrest warrants for 16 individuals. However, the prosecution did not request warrants for 6 of them, considering their criminal records and ages.
The 10 individuals for whom the prosecution requested warrants are accused of trespassing on jointly owned buildings and violating the Assembly and Demonstration Act. Some of them were also charged with causing injury to public officials, including soldiers on guard duty (special obstruction of official duties causing injury).
About 30 Daejinyeon members held a press conference in front of the court around 9 a.m., about an hour before the warrant review, demanding the release of the detained members.
They said, "The reality of the Republic of Korea is one where fairness and common sense cannot be found even if you look hard," and added, "This afternoon, our comrades will be released so that they can stand here together."

The police, in accordance with the Assembly and Demonstration Act, informed them that assemblies are prohibited within 100 meters of the court and issued dispersal orders three times. However, after Daejinyeon finished the press conference and voluntarily dispersed, no clashes occurred.
