US Game Engine Company Unity Lays Off 25% of Employees... Largest Scale
Plan to Lay Off 1,800 Employees
American game engine company Unity will lay off 1,800 employees, equivalent to 25% of its total workforce, within the first quarter.
According to major foreign media including The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 8th (local time), Unity announced that it will carry out layoffs as part of a corporate restructuring plan. All regions and organizations are targeted. This marks the largest layoff in the company's history, following the dismissal of about 1,100 employees over the past two years. The current number of employees is approximately 7,000.
Interim CEO James Whitehurst explained to employees that this measure is to focus on core businesses and pursue long-term success and profitability. In a letter to shareholders, Unity stated, "Through this opportunity, we aim to become a lighter, more agile, and faster-growing company."
Unity provides tools that allow developers to easily create games. Along with Epic Games' 'Unreal Engine,' it dominates the global game development engine market.
