Sold 400 Million Won Worth of Chinese Millet and Bean Powder
Sentenced to 6 Months Imprisonment with 1 Year Probation
A man in his 50s who made rice cakes using Chinese rice and sold them as domestic products worth 400 million won was sentenced to prison.
On the 3rd, Judge Hong Jun-seo of the Criminal Division 5 at Incheon District Court announced that he sentenced Mr. A (58), who was indicted for violating the Act on the Labeling of Origin of Agricultural and Fishery Products, to six months in prison with a one-year probation.
Mr. A was charged with selling rice cakes made from Chinese rice as domestic products from March 2021 to August last year. It was investigated that he purchased 49,000 kg of Chinese rice for 43 million won, made rice cakes from it, and sold them for 490 million won.
Judge Hong stated, "Considering the on-site evidence photos and the purchase records of Chinese rice, guilt is recognized," but added, "I took into account that there were no prior convictions exceeding a fine." as the reason for sentencing.
Earlier, in March last year, a Jeju company was caught making Omegitteok and other products using Chinese millet and soybean powder and falsely labeling the origin as domestic. The company purchased 40 kg of Chinese white soybeans (soybean powder) and 40 kg of Chinese millet to manufacture and sell Omegitteok and other products, falsely labeling the origin as Jeju and selling them on the market.
