Attendees included Byun Seok-hwa, president of the Korea University Football Federation; Kim Byung-seok, CEO of Busan IPark; Han Cheong-su, representative of the Football Scholarship Association led by Jeon Hyeong-du; Park Jong-gwan, general director of university football; along with President Jeon Ho-hwan and the football players. The event drew attention as player Hwang Hee-chan and others sent congratulatory videos.
The first to take the helm of the newly founded Dongmyung University football team is Coach Lee Chang-won. Coach Lee, who made a mark in the youth history of Pohang Steelers, has produced prominent players such as Hwang Hee-chan, Lee Kwang-hyuk, Lee Kwang-hoon, Moon Chang-jin, Moon Gyu-hyun, and Jung Won-jin.
In 2014, he achieved an astonishing record of 40 wins, 4 draws, and 8 losses across seven domestic and international tournaments, boasting a winning rate of 83%. With four championships and one runner-up finish in the King of Kings tournament, he established Pohang as the top youth team in South Korea. In 2021, after taking charge of Daegu Arts University and building the team from the ground up into a united squad, they reached the pinnacle by winning the 58th Autumn University Football Federation Championship (Baekdudaegan Cup) last August. Within two years of his appointment, he transformed an unknown team into a sensational force.
Coach Lee Chang-won pledged, “I will do my best to build a competitive team that can stand strong against those in the metropolitan area.”
Dongmyung University, which will establish a new Department of Football for the 2024 academic year, has promised full support to Coach Lee, including appointing him as a professor. For the football team, the university will install new turf on the field and provide accommodations and a bus for the players.
