[12·4 Cabinet Reshuffle] Kang Jeong-ae Nominated as Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs
President Yoon Suk-yeol nominated Kang Jeong-ae, former president of Sookmyung Women's University, as the Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs on the 4th. Kang is evaluated to have professional insight into veterans' policies, as her father is a Korean War veteran.
Kim Dae-gi, Chief of Staff to the President, said on the same day, "The candidate is a distinguished female management scholar, a seasoned and highly respected elder," adding, "She is the daughter of a Korean War veteran and the granddaughter-in-law of an independence activist on her husband's side, possessing exceptional interest and insight."
Born in 1957, Kang graduated from the Department of Business Administration at Sookmyung Women's University and earned a Ph.D. in Human Resource Economics from Paris 1 University. After being appointed at her alma mater in 1998, she served as the Director of the Career Development Center. Kang has held positions such as a member of the Economic Subcommittee of the Regulatory Reform Committee, a member of the Presidential National Economic Advisory Council, and the 29th President of the Korean Society for Human Resource Management. She later served as Chairperson of the Self-Evaluation Committee at the Ministry of Personnel Management, a public interest member of the Executive Committee of the Tripartite Commission, and Vice President of the Korean Academic Society of Business Administration. In July 2016, after meetings of the faculty council and the board of trustees, she was officially elected as the 19th president of Sookmyung Women's University. Kang currently serves as a professor in the Department of Business Administration at Sookmyung Women's University.
Kang's father participated in the Korean War and was awarded a military merit medal. Her great-grandfather, Baek In (百忍) Kwon Jun (1895?1959), was active during the Japanese colonial period, forming the Uiyoldan with Yak-san Kim Won-bong and others, playing a key role in managing operational funds. Kwon was selected as the 'Independence Activist of the Month' by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs in September 2010.
