Police to Conduct Intensive Drunk Driving Crackdown During Year-End and New Year Period for 2 Months
16.8% of This Year's Drunk Driving Fatal Accidents Occur on Thursdays
The National Police Agency announced on the 30th that it will conduct intensive crackdowns on drunk driving ahead of the year-end and New Year holidays, when various drinking gatherings such as year-end parties increase. The period will be from the 1st of next month to January 31 of next year.
The police will conduct crackdowns regardless of day or night, frequently changing the time and place of enforcement, focusing on high-risk areas for drunk driving. They plan to carry out nationwide simultaneous crackdowns led by the National Police Agency on Thursdays, when drunk driving traffic fatalities occur most frequently, as well as at least twice a week crackdowns led by each city and provincial police agency. As of the 31st of last month, 16.8% (16 people) of the 95 drunk driving traffic accident deaths this year occurred on Thursdays.

An official from the National Police Agency stated, “Although strong government-wide responses continue based on social consensus against drunk driving, it has still not been eradicated,” adding, “Drunk driving is a criminal act that can destroy the lives and families of others, so we will make sure to root it out from our society.”
