Mokpo Coast Guard, Chinese Cargo Ship Sinks... Suspected Illegal Immigration
Strengthening Maritime and Land Border Security Against Illegal Immigration Near Sinan Gageodo
Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Kim Hae-cheol) received a report at around 7:28 a.m. on the 29th that a vessel, presumed to be a Chinese cargo ship, was sinking near Gageodo Island in Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do. Patrol ships and coastal rescue boats were immediately dispatched to the scene.
At around 8:09 a.m., Mokpo Maritime Police arrived at the accident vessel. After boarding and searching inside the ship, no crew members were found in the wheelhouse, cabins, or engine room, and no drowning victims were found in the surrounding waters. Based on these findings, they intensified foreign affairs activities suspecting illegal immigration.
The Maritime Police formed a dedicated foreign affairs illegal immigration task force and are conducting foreign affairs activities to respond to illegal immigration, including sea and land searches around Gageodo and nearby islands (Heuksando, Jindo, Mokpo, etc.), as well as sharing the situation with related agencies such as the Navy's 3rd Fleet.
