Suwon Ilwol Arboretum Registered as 'Public Arboretum'... Secures 1,000 Species of Tree Genetic Resources
Ilwol Arboretum in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, which opened last May, has completed its registration as a "public arboretum." It is the first registered arboretum in Suwon and the 16th arboretum in Gyeonggi Province.
To register as a public arboretum, according to the "Act on the Creation and Promotion of Arboretums and Gardens," it must secure more than 1,000 species of plant genetic resources and have preservation and propagation research facilities, management facilities, and professional management personnel.
Ilwol Arboretum, established within Ilwol Park in Cheoncheon-dong, Jangan-gu, covers an area of 101,500 square meters and houses 2,016 species and over 52,000 plants. By the end of October, the number of visitors surpassed 260,000, showing strong public affection.
Earlier, in 2014, Suwon City planned the creation of an "urban arboretum" to provide citizens with a place to feel close to nature, and held the "Suwon Arboretum Creation Project Review Meeting" in July of that year.
Construction began in November 2020, was completed in December last year, and the arboretum opened on May 19 this year.
