Disease Control Agency Strengthens Infectious Disease Surveillance Cooperation with African Countries
On the 3rd, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) announced that it will sign a grant agreement with the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Seoul to strengthen cooperation in responding to infectious diseases in Africa. The main areas of the cooperative project will focus on establishing infectious disease laboratory systems and networks, as well as building infectious disease information and surveillance systems.
This agreement was made to smoothly implement the Official Development Assistance (ODA) project for strengthening cooperation in responding to infectious diseases in Africa, which was signed between the two organizations in April last year. Official Development Assistance refers to aid provided by governments and public institutions aimed at promoting economic development and social welfare in developing countries. The KDCA will invest a total of 4.8 billion KRW to carry out this project over the next five years.
Ji Young-mi, Commissioner of the KDCA, stated, “The infectious disease response experiences possessed by the KDCA are highly relevant to the key projects carried out by the Africa CDC, and we hope this will help strengthen public health crisis response capabilities in the African region and establish systems to prepare for future pandemic infectious diseases.”
