Dong-Eui University, 46th Anniversary Commemoration Seonggak Monk's Calligraphy Exhibition Invitation
Dong-Eui University is holding a special invitational exhibition of Seon calligraphy paintings by Seonggak Seunim (head monk of Mangunsa Temple in Namhae, Gyeongnam) titled “Meeting Seonggak Seunim, Seon, Calligraphy, and Painting” to commemorate the 57th anniversary of the establishment of the Dong-Eui Academy Foundation and the 46th anniversary of Dong-Eui University’s founding.
The invitational exhibition of Seonggak Seunim, a holder of Busan City intangible cultural asset for Seon painting, began with an opening ceremony held at 4:30 p.m. on the 26th at the Hyomin Gallery on the 2nd floor of the International Hall at Dong-Eui University and will continue until November 3.
About 40 guests from various fields attended the opening ceremony, including Dong-Eui University President Han Suhwan, Silla University President Heo Namsik, Busan Metropolitan Police Agency Chief Woo Cheolmun, KNN CEO Lee Osang, comedian and film director Shim Hyeongrae, former Busan Museum Director Yang Maengjun, Ssanggyesa Temple head monk Yeongdam Seunim, Ssanggyesa Temple Kangju Daegak Seunim, and Goseong Okcheonsa Temple head monk Jongseong Seunim.
There was also a martial arts demonstration by master Kim Jinseop of Bongukgeom and a live demonstration of Seon calligraphy painting by Seonggak Seunim.
The exhibition features over 40 Seon calligraphy paintings by Seonggak Seunim, including works such as “Eokgeop’s Smile,” “The Smile of Every Child,” “Hansan Acquisition,” “Family Love,” “Eternal Mountains and Rivers,” “Hwaseem,” “Bodhidharma,” the Heart Sutra written in ancient seal script, and paintings of Bodhidharma and Avalokitesvara.
Seonggak Seunim said, “I have continued my meditation practice while painting Seon calligraphy with a humble and friendly brush that embraces the world and people warmly. Since each piece is the result of my practice, I hope viewers will gain teachings and enlightenment from them.”
The Dong-Eui University Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences held an academic conference on the 26th at 1:30 p.m. in the Communication Meeting Room of the International Hall under the theme “禪 (Seon), 書 (Calligraphy), and 畵 (Painting).”
At the conference, presentations included “The Language of Awakening, the Language of Enlightenment ? Focusing on Seongcheol Seunim’s Odo Songs and Nirvana Songs” by Professor Kang Kyunggu of Dong-Eui University’s Department of Chinese Language and Literature, “The History of Seon Calligraphy Painting and Its Value as Intangible Cultural Heritage” by Park Seonghwan, CEO of The Lab C, and “Seon Painting, the Aesthetics of Open Childlike Innocence” by Professor Lee Eunjeong of Dong-Eui University’s Dong-Eui Jicheon College of Liberal Arts.

This was followed by a comprehensive discussion chaired by former Dean of Education at Busan National University Kim Daehyun, with participants including Lee Hyunju, Deputy Director of the Beomosa Temple Cultural Heritage Museum, Choi Duheon, Curator of the Tongdosa Temple Cultural Heritage Museum, and Professor Choi Youngho of Dong-A University’s Department of Archaeology and Art History.
