The Trend is Carbon-Free Energy... Government and Companies Unite in CF Alliance
Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry to Hold CF Alliance Launch Ceremony on the 27th
Renewable energy, nuclear power, hydrogen, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) · and other carbon-free energy utilization and supply promotion organization, the Carbon Free Alliance (CF Alliance), has officially launched.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (hereinafter referred to as MOTIE) and the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (hereinafter referred to as KCCI) announced on the 26th that on the 27th, the CF Alliance launch ceremony was held at the KCCI building with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, CF Alliance Chairman Lee Hoe-sung, MOTIE Minister Moon Seong-gyu, KCCI Executive Vice Chairman Woo Tae-hee, and representatives of CF Alliance member companies in attendance.
The CF Alliance is a key organization for promoting the CFE (Carbon Free Energy) initiative proposed by President Yoon in his keynote speech at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, and is a public-private joint consultative body formed to globalize the CFE initiative. Through this launch ceremony, it will officially begin its activities.
At the event, major company executives participating in the CF Alliance attended, including Nam Seok-woo, President of Samsung Electronics; Heo Yong-soo, President of GS Energy; Jung Yeon-in, President of Doosan Enerbility; Kim Jong-woo, President of LS Electric; Lee Si-woo, President of POSCO; as well as representatives from SK Hynix, Hyundai Motor Company, LG Chem, and Hanwha Solutions.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who attended to congratulate the launch ceremony, said, “The CF Alliance is Korea’s proposal to solve various challenges faced by the international community such as climate, environment, and energy.” He added, “The CF Alliance and the CFE initiative will serve as an opportunity to establish Korea’s status as a global pivotal country that our government aims for,” and said, “The Korean government will make special efforts to ensure that the CF Alliance achieves concrete results.”
Lee Hoe-sung, Chairman of the CF Alliance, emphasized in his inaugural speech, “The era when the climate crisis can be solved by choosing a specific energy source is over,” and “It is time for major governments, international organizations, and economic actors worldwide to explore all means that can practically contribute to carbon neutrality.”
After the launch ceremony, the CF Alliance plans to cooperate with the government to form an international working group to establish a CFE certification system and continuously expand participation in the CFE initiative, focusing on major multinational companies.
Woo Tae-hee, Vice Chairman of KCCI and a member of the CF Alliance board, said, “Last week, I heard that the European Union (EU) is moving toward including nuclear power in the ‘Net Zero Industry Act’ (NZIA) supporting green industry investment,” and added, “I expect that the CF Alliance’s activities will not only positively influence the international spread of carbon-free energy promoted by the government but also serve as a major hub for our companies’ carbon reduction efforts.”
The CF Alliance plans to participate in various international seminars and business roundtables at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in November and the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) in December, focusing on spreading international consensus on the ‘CFE initiative.’

It will promote cooperation with organizations that share the recognition of the importance and broad utilization of carbon-free energy, such as the U.S. Clean Energy Buyer Alliance (CEBA). In cooperation with the government, it will also participate in forming and operating an international joint working group to prepare a tentative ‘CFE program’ encompassing certification standards, membership requirements, and specific goals. Through this, it plans to continuously encourage participation in the CFE initiative by major governments and multinational companies.
