Daewoo E&C Expands Entry into Eastern European Nuclear Power Plant Market
Daewoo E&C is promoting the expansion of its entry into the Eastern European market based on its status as the top nuclear power competitor in Korea.
Recently, the European nuclear power market has seen a renewed increase in demand for nuclear power generation due to uncertainties in energy prices. Accordingly, orders for new nuclear power plants and related fields are gradually increasing. Daewoo E&C has been steadily preparing to enter the Eastern European nuclear power market in line with these market changes. Currently, it is participating as part of Team Korea, including Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, in the construction projects of commercial nuclear power plants in the Czech Republic and Poland, which are now in the bidding process. Daewoo E&C is serving as the main contractor, widely promoting Korea's nuclear competitiveness.

Amid these external conditions, Daewoo E&C is pursuing participation in the LILW storage facility construction project in Slovenia. The Slovenian LILW storage project involves constructing a new facility for the disposal of low and intermediate-level radioactive waste near the Kr?ko nuclear power plant site in Slovenia. The project includes the construction of one silo using a shallow geological disposal method and auxiliary facilities. The invitation to bid for this project was issued in June this year, and the bidding is expected to take place as early as the end of this year to select the successful bidder.
Daewoo E&C has already successfully completed the first phase of a low and intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal facility in Korea and is currently constructing the second phase, while also conducting the basic design for the third phase, securing unparalleled design and construction technology. Through its entry into the Slovenian LILW storage project, Daewoo E&C plans to lay the foundation for winning the contract for the second unit of the Kr?ko nuclear power plant.

The currently operating units 1 and 2 at Cernavod? are heavy-water reactors, the same type as the Wolsong nuclear power plant, which Daewoo E&C is the only domestic company to have constructed. Therefore, it is evaluated that Daewoo E&C already has technological competitiveness for future bids. Since the Romanian government is also promoting SMR construction, Daewoo E&C plans to actively enter the Romanian market.
Additionally, Daewoo E&C is pursuing partnerships with domestic and international joint business development partners for the SMR business, which it has proactively invested in, anticipating the gradual expansion of demand in the Eastern European market. The main target countries for entry are expected to be Poland, Estonia, and the Czech Republic. Daewoo E&C is making thorough preparations, including securing supply chains in each country and opening a branch office in Poland in October.
