China Dismisses Li Shangfu as Defense Minister After Two Months of Disappearance

The Chinese government announced on the 24th that Minister Li has been dismissed. No further explanation was provided regarding the dismissal. This follows the same pattern as Qin Gang, the former Chinese Foreign Minister, who was dismissed after his whereabouts became unknown.

Minister Li has not been seen for two months since attending the 3rd China-Africa Peace and Security Forum held in Beijing last August. Related foreign media have interpreted that Minister Li was effectively removed after being investigated by authorities for issues such as corruption. In July, Foreign Minister Qin was also dismissed after being missing for a month.
