Gurye-gun Successfully Concludes World Traditional Play Culture Festival

Laughing, Running, Holding Hands: A Sports Day Full of Energy and Cheers

Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that the World Traditional Play Culture Festival was successfully held over two days on October 19 and 20 at the Jirisan History and Culture Center.

Designed to foster understanding of other countries' cultures and enhance cultural sensitivity through experiencing traditional folk games from around the world, the festival was attended by about 1,000 children and parents from 20 early childhood institutions in Gurye, Suncheon, Gwangyang, Gokseong, and Namwon.

Various play experiences were offered, including Korea's traditional games such as Dansimjulnori and Ganggangsullae, China's plate spinning, Japan's Kendama, the United States' Cornhole, the United Kingdom's giant Jenga, Finland's M?lkky, Sweden's Kubb, Russia's Gablit, Mongolia's Shagai, Vietnam's Zhuon Zhuon, the Philippines' Tinikling, Indonesia's Lari Kayu, France's P?tanque, Germany's Mikado, Egypt's Senet, and Scotland's curling.

The festival also featured unique exhibitions and hands-on activities such as traditional mask plays and musical instrument performances from around the world. On the deepening autumn days, the Jirisan History and Culture Center was lively with groups of children and family visitors enjoying the experiences together.

County Governor Kim Sun-ho stated, “Next year, we will operate world traditional play culture experiences, seasonal customs experiences, nationwide teacher training programs, and ongoing hands-on programs to make the Jirisan History and Culture Center the top destination for experiential learning.”
