About 450 people, including former Korea University President Jung Jin-taek, students, faculty, and alumni, attended the event.
Former Secretary-General Ban began his lecture by mentioning the Paris Agreement, saying, "The 2015 Paris Agreement is one of the things I am proud of in my life," referring to the agreement that took over ten years to conclude since his inauguration. He stated, "The most important thing in the world is the climate. If the climate does not change, the Earth will perish, and so will we," emphasizing the need to work on climate change.
He continued, "Climate change is humanity's fault. Industrial, aviation, and transportation developments have enriched our lives, and global warming resulting from these is a natural consequence," warning, "If we do not continue to strive against climate change, the sixth mass extinction will occur within 100 years," predicting that 70% of humans and animals will die.
Additionally, former Secretary-General Ban stressed the necessity of nuclear power, stating, "Nuclear power is the cleanest energy," while referring to the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan. He explained, "Nuclear power plants were shut down because they are clean but potentially fatal. However, nuclear power emits 10g of greenhouse gases per 1kWh, whereas sustainable renewable energy like solar power emits 57g. Nuclear power is six times cleaner than solar energy," underscoring the importance of nuclear power.
