Daegu City Council Member Lee Jaehwa: "To Create a Brighter Society, the Scope of Volunteer Appreciation Must Be Expanded"
Urgent Appeal to Daegu City Through a 5-Minute Speech
Daegu City Council member Lee Jae-hwa (People Power Party·Seo-gu 2) urged measures to revitalize volunteer activities during a 5-minute free speech at the 3rd plenary session of the 304th extraordinary meeting held on the 20th.
Council member Lee Jae-hwa stated that although volunteers who have consistently volunteered for more than 50 hours annually are currently appointed as ‘Outstanding Volunteers’ and are given courtesy and support, the effectiveness is very limited due to extremely restricted utilization methods. He argued that if the scope of courtesy and support is slightly expanded, it would not only provide greater satisfaction to existing volunteers but also motivate potential volunteers.
Council member Lee Jae-hwa said, “It is time to change our perspective on volunteer activities,” emphasizing, “Now, volunteer activities should be regarded not simply as self-realization but as a means to form social bonds in our society.”
He continued, “Rapid changes in society have weakened the bonds among social members, increasing the number of people who feel alienated without belonging to any group and eventually come to hate society itself. This has led to various problems, including the occurrence of so-called ‘random crimes’ commonly referred to as ‘abnormal motive crimes.’”
He also stated, “Before being a council member, as one of the members of our local community, what our society needs now may be social bonds and emotional stability rather than material wealth,” advocating the need to spread positive influence and improve social atmosphere through revitalizing volunteer activities.
