Suncheon-si Awarded 'Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award' at Korea City Awards

Urban Regeneration Achieves Success Including Revitalization of Resident Participation

Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced that it has received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award in the ‘2023 Korea Urban Awards,’ which evaluates the sustainability of cities and the level of living infrastructure.

The Korea Urban Awards, based on the ‘National Land Planning and Utilization Act,’ have been awarded annually by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport since 2007. The awards evaluate the efforts of 229 local governments nationwide to improve urban spaces and citizens' quality of life, as well as to enhance urban competitiveness.

The evaluation is divided into basic indicator assessments and policy indicator assessments across four categories: urban society, economy, environment, and support systems. Selection is made through rigorous evaluations including expert document reviews and on-site inspections.

Suncheon was selected for the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award due to its outstanding achievements in the support system category, including prevention of indiscriminate development in non-urban and green areas, urban regeneration and revitalization, and activation of resident participation.

A city official stated, “The perfect harmony among citizens, public officials, and the mayor led to the city’s transformation, and this achievement was recognized with the Urban Award. We will continue to strive to develop a high-quality premium residential city and to discover policies that improve citizens’ quality of life.”
