Jindo-gun Achieves Consecutive 2-Year Selection for 'Future Intangible Heritage Discovery and Promotion Project'

Selected Through National Contest: 'Chigihyeong Folk Game of Jindo Region'

Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do, has been selected for the 2024 Cultural Heritage Administration Future Intangible Heritage Discovery and Promotion Project, achieving the great feat of being selected for two consecutive years following last year.

According to the county on the 19th, the Cultural Heritage Administration Future Intangible Heritage Discovery and Promotion Project is a program that proactively discovers non-designated intangible heritage at risk of transmission interruption and nurtures it as a future cultural resource.

‘Chigi-type folk games of the Jindo region’ were selected through a national public contest based on the research results of Professor Na Kyung-su from Chonnam National University, a native of Jindo-gun, securing a project budget of 200 million KRW this year and 60 million KRW next year.

This year, as the first phase of the project, investigations into the chigi-type folk games by region in Jindo-gun are underway, and based on the investigation results, a national academic conference was held last month with participation from renowned domestic play experts, engaging in heated discussions on ‘Inheritance and Utilization Plans of Chigi-type Folk Games.’

Professor Lee Kyung-yeop of Mokpo National University, the principal researcher, said, “Through this academic conference, the value of ‘chigi-type folk games’ as intangible cultural heritage was confirmed,” and added, “We ask for the active interest and cooperation of residents so that it can contribute to the revitalization of local culture and the promotion of national culture.”

A representative from the Jindo-gun Culture, Arts and Sports Division stated, “With Netflix’s Squid Game gaining worldwide popularity, our traditional games have been reappraised,” and said, “Following this trend, we will do our best to restore and promote the old chigi-type folk games and strive to strengthen the status of the Republic of Korea’s Folk Culture and Arts Special Zone.”
