Yoo In-chon "Expecting Leading Role in International Sports Development"
Kim Jae-yeol, President of the International Skating Union (ISU), was elected as a new member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the 141st IOC Session held in Mumbai, India, on the 17th.
IOC members consist of individuals (up to 70), National Olympic Committee (NOC) executives (up to 15), international federation executives (up to 15), and athlete members (up to 15). All members have the same rights and voting power regardless of category. President Kim was appointed as a representative of the international federation. He has steadily built his position in the field of winter sports and was recommended as a candidate at last month's IOC Executive Board meeting.
President Kim has served as the President of the Korea Skating Union, Vice Chairman of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Organizing Committee, Vice President of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, member of the IOC Coordination Commission for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, and Executive Board member of the ISU. In June last year, he was elected as the first non-European president in the 130-year history of the ISU.
Currently, there are a total of ninety-nine members active in the IOC. Eight new members were added at this session, bringing the total to 107. The existing Korean members are Lee Ki-heung, President of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, and Yoo Seung-min, an athlete member. President Kim becomes the twelfth Korean to join the ranks.
