Le Cl?zio first visited Korea in 2001 at the invitation of the Daesan Foundation and has since visited Korea several times. In 2007, he served as a distinguished professor at Ewha Womans University for one year, lecturing on French literature and culture. Since 2005, he has consistently participated in the Seoul International Literature Forum, maintaining active exchanges with Korea, and is known as a prominent pro-Korean writer. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2008, and his works include the novels Desert, Fever, The Golden Fish, The Storm, Shining: Under the Seoul Sky, and Song of Brittany · The Child and War.
In this lecture, he will talk about mythology and literature. Through Le Cl?zio’s perspective, which seeks communication and coexistence among various civilizations through literature, the hidden relationships between mythology, literature, and writing in diverse cultures will be explored. He stated, "Korea is closely connected to mythology. According to legend, Jeju has over one hundred thousand spirits (‘mu’) and just as many shamans (‘mudang’)." He added, "Jeju is a place that has taught me much about dreams and life, logical writing, and the freedom of imagination. As a token of gratitude, I plan to talk about Jeju, Udo, and the haenyeo (female divers)."
The lecture will be held on November 2nd at 7 p.m. in Daesan Hall (23rd floor of the Kyobo Building in Gwanghwamun). Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis, and simultaneous interpretation in Korean and French will be provided.
