Public Reaction to Paparazzi Photographing Obama’s Two Daughters Smoking: "They Didn’t Break Any Laws..."
Some Media Outlets Release Photos of Obama Daughters Smoking
On SNS, Calls to "Protect Their Privacy"
Photos of former U.S. President Barack Obama's two daughters smoking cigarettes were released through the media. In response, the public expressed that there is no reason to interfere with their privacy.
Last month, some media outlets published photos of Sasha (22), Obama's younger daughter, smoking and chatting with friends as she left a party during Labor Day weekend. Sasha is currently attending the University of Southern California.
Following this, her older sister Malia was spotted smoking near a convenience store in Los Angeles (LA) on the 4th (local time). Malia graduated from Harvard University and debuted as a screenwriter in 2021.
The local media outlet Atlanta Black Star reported on the public's reaction to the photos of former President Obama's two daughters smoking, released on the 7th.

View original imageOne X (formerly Twitter) user said, "It's ironic that Malia, who wore a T-shirt promoting quitting smoking with the slogan 'Smoking kills,' was caught smoking on the street." Malia had previously faced backlash when she was exposed smoking marijuana at the famous Lollapalooza music festival in her hometown Chicago in 2016, and a video of her smoking cigarettes was leaked in 2017.
Another comment stated, "Malia smoking is an act that tarnishes the family name," and compared it to "Eric Trump, son of former President Donald Trump, committing fraud under the pretense of charity."
Former President Obama is known to have struggled with quitting smoking until he completely stopped in 2011. During his presidency, he suppressed his smoking urges by chewing nicotine gum but confessed that due to the immense pressure he felt as president, he once smoked in a restricted area of the White House.
However, most people defended the sisters, saying, "The two daughters who left the White House six years ago should be left to live their own lives," while criticizing the media for publishing sensational articles. One X user pointed out, "They didn't break any laws, so there's no reason to take such photos and broadcast them as news."
Another user criticized, "Imagine paparazzi taking photos and shouting 'Gotcha!'" and added, "Malia and Sasha must be tired of those who follow them around taking pictures."
Meanwhile, when a video of Malia smoking was leaked in 2017, Ivanka Trump, daughter of former President Trump, and Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former President Bill Clinton, both defended Malia, drawing attention.
