Kakao "Requests Police Investigation"
It has been revealed that a macro (automation) program was used behind the unusually high proportion of Chinese support on the Hangzhou Asian Games cheering page on Kakao's portal site Daum.
On the 4th, Kakao stated, "The analysis shows that the abnormal phenomenon in the number of clicks cheering for the Korea-China quarterfinal match was an unusual occurrence created by two IPs using macro programs during late-night hours when there were few users."
Kakao explained that on the 1st, two overseas IPs confirmed to have participated in the Asian Games Korea-China men's soccer quarterfinal click cheering on Daum Sports' 'Click Cheer' page accounted for 19.89 million clicks, which is 99.8% of the total 19.93 million clicks from overseas IPs.
The click proportions of the two IPs were 79.4% (15.39 million clicks) from the Netherlands and 20.6% (4.49 million clicks) from Japan. The clicks from these IPs occurred around 12:30 AM on the 2nd, after the match had ended.
During the quarterfinals, out of approximately 31.3 million click cheers, Chinese click cheers accounted for 93.2% (29.19 million clicks), overwhelmingly surpassing Korean click cheers at 6.8% (2.11 million clicks), showing an abnormal phenomenon.
Park Sung-joong, the People Power Party spokesperson on the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting Communications Committee, raised suspicions on the 3rd that manipulation forces were involved during the quarterfinals in a press conference.
Daum Sports' 'Click Cheer' was first introduced in March 2015 and is a feature that allows anyone to easily cheer for sports games without logging in. It is based on a non-login system and has no limit on the number of cheers.
Considering that click cheers can be excessively inflated for a specific team because clicks can be made unlimitedly without logging in, Daum suspended the service on the 2nd.

Kakao emphasized that the abnormal phenomenon in the number of cheers was an unusual occurrence created by two IPs using macro programs during late-night hours with few users, and considers it a serious obstruction of business that damages the purpose of the service, and plans to request a police investigation.
