[Asian Games] Kim Mingyu Wins Silver Medal in Uzbekistan Traditional Martial Art Krash
South Korea won a silver medal in the 'Uzbekistan traditional martial art' Kurash event.
Kim Min-gyu (Chungbuk Kurash Federation) lost 0-10 to Sadegh Azarang (Iran) in the final match of the men's under 90kg Kurash competition at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games held on the 2nd at the Xiaoshan Linpu Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China, earning the silver medal.
Kurash is a traditional martial art of Uzbekistan that has been officially included as an event since the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games.
Kurash means 'to compete, to contest, to fight' in Uzbek, and is widely enjoyed in Central Asia and the Middle East, including its country of origin, Uzbekistan. This sport, with a history of over 3,000 years, shares many similarities in techniques and competition style with judo and ssireum (Korean wrestling). However, unlike those two sports, attacking the lower body is prohibited. The athletes wear uniforms in blue and green colors to distinguish competitors.
The Korean national team failed to place in the previous games but demonstrated rapid growth by entering the medal ranks on their second attempt.
Earlier, on the 30th of last month, Kwon Jae-deok (Chungbuk Kurash Federation) won a bronze medal in the under 66kg category, and Jeong Jun-yong (Gyeongbuk Kurash Federation) won a bronze medal in the over 90kg category, marking the first time in Korean Kurash history that medals were won at the Asian Games. In Asian Games Kurash, both semifinal losers are awarded bronze medals.
With Kim Min-gyu adding a silver medal on this day, the Korean team collected a total of one silver and two bronze medals in the Kurash events.
