On the 26th, Suwon City announced on the 27th that it had opened the 'Jeongjo Theme Performance Hall' at 817 Jeongjo-ro, Paldal-gu, where various local cultural content performances including Muye 24gi can be held.
The Jeongjo Theme Performance Hall, built in the form of a hanok next to Hwaseong Haenggung, has a total floor area of 3,412.7㎡ and consists of one above-ground floor and two basement levels.
The first floor houses the Eoul Madang and education rooms, the first basement floor includes an open-air performance hall, practice rooms, and performance support offices. The second basement floor contains the main performance hall with 258 seats, dressing rooms, and waiting rooms.
Earlier, in April 2020, Suwon City signed an agreement with the Jeongjo Humanities and Arts Foundation for the construction of the Jeongjo Theme Performance Hall and completed the donation and acceptance from the foundation in June. The total project cost was 16 billion KRW.
The Jeongjo Theme Performance Hall will showcase various performances reflecting Suwon's unique characteristics, including the regular performance of 'Muye 24gi.' Muye 24gi refers to 24 types of martial arts recorded in the martial arts manual 'Muye Dobo Tongji (武藝圖譜通志)' compiled by King Jeongjo's order.
Until now, Muye 24gi performances were held outdoors and could not be performed in bad weather. Performances had to be suspended during extreme cold or heat. With the opening of the Jeongjo Theme Performance Hall, performances can now be held regardless of the weather.
The opening ceremony featured performances of Muye 24gi by the Suwon City Performance Group and pansori by master singer Namgung Jeong-ae.
Lee Jae-jun, Mayor of Suwon, said, "The Jeongjo Theme Performance Hall will play a significant role in revitalizing experiential tourism around Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon," and added, "I hope it will establish itself as a performance hall where King Jeongjo's spirit of caring for the people is realized."
