Ichilgu, Gyeongbuk Provincial Assembly Member, Elected as Chairperson of the Council of City and Provincial Assembly Operations Committee
Lee Chil-gu, Chair of the Operations Committee of the Gyeongbuk Provincial Council (People Power Party·Pohang 3), was elected as the President of the Korea Council of Chairpersons of Operations Committees of Metropolitan and Provincial Councils at the regular meeting held in Sejong City on the 25th.
Chairman Lee succeeded Park Hwan-hee (Chair of the Seoul Metropolitan Council Operations Committee) from the first half term and will lead the 10th Council of Chairpersons of Operations Committees in the second half term.

View original imageNewly appointed Chairman Lee Chil-gu previously served as a member of the Pohang City Council and as Chair of the Pohang City Council in the latter half of the 6th term and the first half of the 7th term. After entering the 11th Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Council, he currently serves as Chair of the Council Operations Committee of the 12th Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Council. Based on his experience spanning both basic and metropolitan councils and his extensive tenure as chairperson and committee chair, he is regarded as the right person to lead the Council of Chairpersons of Operations Committees in the second half term.
Chairman Lee Chil-gu expressed his gratitude and sense of responsibility in his opening remarks, saying, “First, I am thankful for being entrusted with the important position representing the chairpersons of operations committees of the 17 metropolitan and provincial councils, and I also feel a heavy responsibility.” He added, “The projects initiated by former Chairman Park Hwan-hee in the first half term will be carried forward with continuity, and practical measures such as securing independent organizational authority and budget authority, as well as expanding policy support officers to strengthen the role and status of local councils, will also be reinforced.”
He further stated, “Although policy support officers, hired at a ratio of one per two council members, are currently operating in various forms across the metropolitan and provincial councils, I believe there is still much deliberation and discussion needed regarding the evaluation of these policy support officers.” He added, “To this end, the Council of Chairpersons of Operations Committees plans to develop an evaluation system and standardized manual for policy support officers to support their utilization in metropolitan and provincial councils.”

The Korea Council of Chairpersons of Operations Committees of Metropolitan and Provincial Councils was launched in 1991 through the cooperation of chairpersons of operations committees from 17 metropolitan and provincial councils. Now in its 10th term, it has played a key role in local autonomy and the development of local councils by discussing common interests of the 17 metropolitan and provincial councils and proposing joint agendas to the central government.
