Gwangju Buk-gu Selected as an Excellent Institution for Dementia Management Program
On the 21st, Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced that it was the only institution in Gwangju to be selected as an 'Excellent Dementia Management Program Institution' at the '16th Dementia Overcoming Day Commemoration Event' hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in celebration of Dementia Overcoming Day.
Dementia Overcoming Day was designated worldwide in 1995 by the World Health Organization and the International Alzheimer’s Association to create an opportunity for families and society to newly recognize the care of dementia patients. In Korea, nationwide commemorative events have been held annually since 2008, and this year marks the 16th event.
This Dementia Overcoming Day commemoration event was organized to actively discover contributors and institutions that have made efforts and contributions to overcoming dementia in local communities and to spread social consensus on overcoming dementia. Buk-gu was the only district in Gwangju selected as an excellent dementia management program institution and received the Minister of Health and Welfare Award.
Since the opening of the Buk-gu Dementia Safety Center in 2019, Buk-gu has established a network with three regional dementia safety center branches, operating various dementia management programs such as dementia awareness improvement, dementia prevention, and dementia partner projects targeting the entire Buk-gu area. These efforts have been continuously made to eliminate dementia blind spots, resulting in an evaluation that a dense dementia safety net has been established in the local community.

A Buk-gu official stated, "To greet the era of 100 years of age healthily and vibrantly, dementia is a task that all members of the local community must work together to solve, not just a specific individual." He added, "We will continue to strengthen community care through customized operation planning for the four regional dementia safety centers and do our best so that dementia patients and their families can safely and happily overcome dementia and live their lives."
