Attendance at World Smart City Expo Opening Ceremony
Cooperation Requested from Kim Oh-jin, 1st Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport
Lee Sang-il, Mayor of Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, requested the government to expedite the construction of the semiconductor expressway.
On the 6th, Mayor Lee attended the ’2023 World Smart City Expo (WSCE 2023)’ held at KINTEX in Goyang and met with Kim Oh-jin, First Vice Minister of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, to convey this intention.

Hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Science and ICT, WSCE is a platform where smart city leaders, experts, and related companies from around the world gather to exchange policies and technologies to create better cities together.
As the largest smart city-related expo in the Asia-Pacific region, Yongin City operates a joint promotional booth with the Yongin Industry Promotion Agency until the 8th during this event.
At the Yongin City promotional booth, Mayor Lee personally explained to Vice Minister Kim about the Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex in Idong and Namsa-eup, the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster in Wonsam-myeon, and the Samsung Electronics Giheung Future Research Complex, stating, "As a semiconductor-specialized complex designated with full national support, Yongin’s semiconductor ecosystem will become the best in the world."

Mayor Lee especially emphasized, “To quickly strengthen semiconductor capabilities, the expansion of transportation networks such as roads is urgent,” and requested active support from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Vice Minister Kim responded, “Strengthening semiconductor competitiveness through the successful establishment of the Yongin National Industrial Complex is directly linked to national competitiveness, so the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will do its best.”
Meanwhile, at the Yongin City joint promotional booth, the city showcased its key initiatives including the ‘Yongin L-shaped Semiconductor Belt,’ the creation of a national advanced strategic industry specialized complex, AI (Artificial Intelligence) and IoT (Internet of Things)-based lifestyle pattern customized smart care policies, electric vehicle charging control and surplus power utilization charging systems, and an IoT-based real-time fine dust measurement information provision system. The booth also introduced products and services from five companies based in the Yongin area.
The city was recognized for its smart city industry development and the achievement of the ‘Underground Passage Information Notification AI System Construction’ at this event, winning the ‘Domestic City’ category at the Smart City Awards. The Underground Passage Information Notification AI System is designed to prevent accidents and ensure safe passage by providing real-time information about the opposite side of the underpass to drivers and pedestrians using CCTV, electronic display boards, warning lights, and audio devices.
