The police immediately dispatched officers and found a man standing with a weapon on a traffic island at the intersection. At that time, people were gathering at the intersection after work.
To prevent casualties, the police subdued the man with a handgun instead of a taser gun. When the police aimed the handgun and shouted, "Get down!", "Drop the knife!", the man immediately put down the weapon and lowered his posture.
Afterward, the police approached the man, pushed the weapon away with their foot, and arrested him. It took 20 seconds from the police arriving at the scene to subduing the suspect.
According to the police investigation, the suspect was a man in his 40s who stated, "I bought the weapon to harm myself because my father scolded me." He is currently being sent to the prosecution on charges of being a potential offender under the Act on the Punishment of Violent Acts.

As random weapon rampage incidents have surged recently, President Yoon Seok-yeol announced a response plan to "supply low-risk handguns to all on-site police officers and newly provide weapon response equipment to 101 riot squads."
The low-risk handgun is about 25% lighter compared to existing handguns, and its recoil upon firing is about 30%. It was developed so that when fired, the bullet penetrates up to about 6 cm into the thigh without reaching the bone.
In addition to low-risk bullets, it can also use blanks and live rounds, and it is equipped with a 'smart module' that automatically records the time, place, firing angle, quantity, and type of ammunition fired, allowing precise verification of the situation during firearm use.
