Sleeping 5 Hours a Day Increases Diabetes Risk... Sleeping 12 Hours Raises It Even More
Sleeping Too Long or Too Short Increases Diabetes Risk
Getting About 8 Hours of Sleep a Day Is Optimal
A study has found that people who sleep significantly less or more than the appropriate amount of time have a higher risk of developing diabetes.
According to a report by Medical Express on the 29th (local time), Professor Jeroen Albers and his research team at the Public Health Research Institute of Maastricht University in the Netherlands announced research results showing that excessively long or short daily sleep duration increases the risk of diabetes.
The study was conducted using past research data on daily sleep duration and blood glucose test results from 5,561 adults aged 40 to 75. Type 1 diabetes was excluded from the analysis.
According to the analysis, people who sleep 5 hours a day had a 2.9 times higher incidence of diabetes compared to those who sleep 8 hours, and those who sleep 12 hours had a 3.2 times higher incidence.
Even after considering variables such as gender, age, diet, alcohol consumption, and smoking, the diabetes incidence rates in the 5-hour and 12-hour sleep groups were 2.6 times and 1.8 times higher, respectively, compared to the 8-hour sleep group.
In other words, sleeping significantly less or more than the appropriate 8 hours increases the likelihood of developing diabetes.

On the other hand, sleeping too much can also lead to prolonged shallow sleep and reduced physical activity time, which can negatively affect health.
