Increasing Violent Thefts and Everyday Violence... Police to Conduct Intensive Crackdown Until October
Robbery and Violent Crimes Increased by 7.2% to 427,291 Cases Last Year
The police will intensively crack down on crimes that infringe on people's livelihoods, such as violent robbery and violence around daily life, starting next month.
The National Police Agency's National Investigation Headquarters announced on the 31st that they will conduct an intensive crackdown on these livelihood-infringing crimes for two months from September 1 to October 31.
According to the police, the number of violent robbery and violence crimes increased by 7.2%, from 398,764 cases in 2021 to 427,291 cases last year. The police decided to proactively suppress the crime atmosphere as the number of violent and robbery crimes, which had been on a declining trend, started to rise again last year, and crimes threatening public safety and causing social anxiety, such as armed rampages, occurred consecutively.
The police have designated violence occurring around daily life, violent robbery, and stolen goods offenders as key targets for crackdown. For crimes involving weapons, the principle of zero tolerance with arrest investigations will be applied, and all acts that cause anxiety, such as carrying weapons or wandering, will also be strictly dealt with through multidimensional and comprehensive investigations. Additionally, for cases judged to have a high risk of recidivism, detailed analyses of habituality and potential for retaliatory crimes will be conducted to detect and address risk factors early through active investigations.
Investigations into violent robbery and stolen goods offenders will also be strengthened. By mobilizing all available personnel for intensive investigations and organic cooperation between police stations, cases will be resolved early, and professional and habitual crimes will be thoroughly investigated, including any additional offenses. The disposal and distribution routes of stolen goods will be thoroughly tracked to ensure victims receive substantial restitution, and strict measures will be taken against stolen goods crimes to sever links with violent robbery offenders and deter recidivism.

A police official stated, “To eradicate livelihood crimes, we will consolidate criminal investigation capabilities centered on the National Investigation Headquarters and respond comprehensively throughout the case handling process through organic collaboration among related functions and institutions. We plan to activate crime reporting and tips through building a community safety network with local residents, and support the healthy social reintegration of addictive offenders such as those with alcohol issues or mentally ill individuals at risk of self-harm or harming others by linking them to rehabilitation facilities or medical institutions.”
