Designated Poems for the 1st Hanmoe An Hosang National Korean Poetry Recitation Contest (One selected from four)
1. Han River Song / Lee Geuk-ro
The Han River is a famous river in Joseon
Its source is far away in Mount Taebaek.
Flowing from east to west towards the West Sea,
Marisan of Ganghwa Island welcomes it.
The river basin is a picturesque scene of mountains and fields,
The sound of axes from the villagers can be heard far away.
A rural maiden carrying lunch
Walks hurriedly, sweating.
By the water bend surrounding Hanyang Fortress,
How many heroes have set sail?
The white cranes flying freely in the river sky,
Perhaps they surely know.
Beyond the mountains and across the water, that village
Is where our parents and families live.
The boatmen sitting leisurely on the raft
Joyfully sing of this river and mountain.
2. Thinking of My Beloved / Choi Hyun-bae
On a windy day when my beloved left,
The mountains and rivers seem strange and unbearably lonely.
Does the moon high in the eastern sky search for my beloved?
Beloved, where have you gone, where to?
The grass and trees turn green every spring,
But why does my beloved not return?
Beloved, I cannot live, I cannot live without you,
This sorrow I endure since the day you left.
Beloved, please come soon, I wait anxiously,
The spring welcome hopes for your arrival.
But you do not come, and spring fades away,
Flowers fall and butterflies fly, deepening my sorrow.
The spring water ripples and fills the Han River,
Every time a sailboat comes, my heart pounds,
The setting sun hangs on the western mountain, even tears dry up.
The river flows endlessly without end,
Willow branches hang down into the water,
It stretches long and longer, never ceasing.
- This is a prison sijo written by Oesol in Hamheung prison.
3. Uiryeong Incheon River Song / Jeon Munsu
King Sejong’s Wolincheon River Song
Has been adapted into the Korean Incheon River Song,
Now adapted into the Uiryeong Incheon River Song.
Buddha’s mercy is bestowed upon sentient beings,
King Sejong’s mercy is bestowed upon the ignorant people,
Hangul’s mercy is bestowed upon illiteracy-free Koreans.
Now at the sacred site of General Cheongang Hong,
The establishment of the National Korean Language Dictionary Museum
Will create the celestial gate of the Uiryeong Incheon River Song.
Today, Uiryeong literati
All sing the Cheongang River Song.
4. Dream of Malmoi / Kim Bok-geun
Opening the ridge of Jagul Mountain and releasing the blood clots in the Nam River,
Coming and going through Manchuria and Shanghai as if it were my home,
The friendship we protected with this water is as high as the sky.
Far away, Mr. Baeksan wearing glasses walks,
Followed by Mr. Namjeo, Mr. Goru, and Mr. Hanmoe,
New life sprouted in the darkness of the last night of the lunar month.
Collecting scattered dialect words one by one,
The Korean language persecution incident that stripped the body bare,
Walking the single path of Malmoi, creating the Korean wave.
