Police Request Arrest Warrants for Two Construction Union Officials over Illegal Support to Minjung Party
The police have requested arrest warrants for two construction union officials suspected of illegally donating political funds to the Minjung Party (currently the Progressive Party) during the 21st general election.
On the 28th, the Anti-Corruption and Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced that they had applied for arrest warrants for Kim Chang-nyeon, head of the Northern Metropolitan Area Headquarters of the Construction Union of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, and Heo, the union's secretary-general, on charges of violating the Political Funds Act.
According to the police, ahead of the 21st National Assembly election, in December 2019, they are suspected of sending about 80 million won in donations collected from Construction Union members under the union's name to the Minjung Party. The Political Funds Act prohibits corporations or organizations from donating political funds.
The police believe that Kim Jae-yeon, former co-representative of the Progressive Party and Minjung Party candidate for the Uijeongbu-eul constituency in Gyeonggi Province during the 21st general election, used about 10 million won of the donations for the election, and summoned Kim for investigation in June.
