Samsung Micro and LG Emphasize Car OLED
Form Factor Innovations Including Rollable
Samsung Display and LG Display announced on the 23rd that they participated in the International Information Display Conference (IMID 2023), the largest academic conference in Korea, showcasing micro display and automotive OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technologies. IMID 2023 is being held for three days starting today at BEXCO in Busan.
Samsung Display presented over 60 papers related to next-generation technologies such as micro display and AI this year. It has the highest number of presented papers among participating companies. Samsung operated its unique QD (Quantum Dot)-OLED exhibition booth, demonstrating its technological level to world-renowned scholars.

View original imageLG Display’s Executive Vice President and Head of the Auto Business Group, Kim Byung-woo, delivered the keynote speech at the opening ceremony. LG Display possesses three proprietary technologies: P (Plastic)-OLED, ATO (Advanced Thin OLED), and LTPS LCD.
P-OLED features a flexible plastic substrate that allows bending while maintaining excellent image quality. ATO is a new product with a reasonable price range using a glass substrate. LTPS LCD is advantageous for large-size and high-resolution implementation compared to conventional LCDs. LG Display stated that it aims to increase its market share in the premium automotive display market to over 50% in terms of sales by 2026. The automotive OLED market is growing at an average annual rate of about 28%.

Both companies showcased next-generation products such as rollable displays. Samsung Display exhibited the 12.4-inch 'Rollable Flex' product, first unveiled at 'SID 2023' in May. LG Display’s Group Head Kim said in his keynote speech that they will innovate form factors including extra-large OLED, slidable, rollable, and transparent OLEDs.

They also prepared unique exhibition spaces. Samsung Display created a QD-OLED gaming experience area in the outdoor plaza in front of BEXCO and in a 4.5-ton truck converted into an exhibition space. LG Display set up a special exhibition space featuring Korea’s first 18-inch automotive rollable OLED, automotive P-OLED panels, third-generation OLED TV panels applying meta technology, and a gaming OLED panel experience area.
