On the 22nd, Samsung Electronics announced that it held the '7th Samsung Security Technology Forum' at the Samsung Electronics Seoul R&D Campus in Seocho-gu, Seoul. This was the first offline event in four years.
Samsung Electronics has been hosting the Security Technology Forum annually since 2017. This year's theme was "Hacking for Security: How Hacking Drives Security Innovation." Academics and industry professionals shared the latest technologies and trends.
Jeon Gyeong-hoon, CTO (Chief Technology Officer) of Samsung Electronics DX (Mobile & Consumer Electronics) Division and President of Samsung Research, said, "As hacking techniques evolve, security technologies have grown alongside them," adding, "Samsung Electronics is identifying security vulnerabilities from the hacker's perspective to provide customers with a higher level of security."
Hwang Yong-ho, Executive Director and Head of Security & Privacy Team at Samsung Research, stated, "Hacking is a core element that leads security innovation by examining overlooked or unprepared areas." He proposed various methods that can be applied to enhance security.
Invited lectures were given by Shin Gang-geun, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Michigan, USA; Yoon In-su, Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at KAIST; and Han Jun, Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Yonsei University.
Professor Shin introduced the risks of incorrect decision-making in semi-autonomous systems caused by hacking and solutions to address them. Professor Han shared attack and defense strategies using Internet of Things (IoT) devices and Cyber-Physical System sensor data.
In this year's expanded technical sessions, research from authors of leading security conference papers, joint projects between Samsung Research and business divisions, and the roles and activities of hackers within the company were introduced. Samsung Research researchers belonging to the international team Blue Water, which ranked first in the preliminaries and second in the finals at the world's top hacking competition 'DEFCON CTF 31' held in the United States this year, also participated in session presentations.
